Letter of Reference from Last Employer

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to provide a reference for Chris Dingman. I have had the pleasure of working with Chris this year in my capacity as Head of School at Arrowsmith. Chris is the school’s science teacher and leads five large sections of students in both Biology and Chemistry.

Chris is an extraordinary teacher. Rarely in my time in education have I seen a teacher who accomplishes so much, with so little and leaves everyone around him with the sense that the task was effortless. Amongst his greatest skills as a teacher is that he is able to give his students such a broad and rewarding experience in scientific investigation with resources that would leave many other teachers unwilling to even make the effort. Rather than ever complain, Chris calmly, maturely, and professionally presents what he needs, asks what is possible, formulates options, and goes about the task of educating and inspiring students. Another of Chris’ skills is his ability to serve the needs of students with a variety of learning styles in the same classroom. He consciously makes use of different techniques of presentation and organization within his classroom while seamlessly engaging all of his students in spirited and engaging discussions and experiments. He does all of this while also giving a small group of his more gifted students the opportunity to advance at a faster pace while answering their questions and monitoring their progress.

This spring I had the pleasure to visit two of Chris’ classes – a biology class and a chemistry class. Entering Chris’ classroom one gets an immediate feel for the very careful, productive, yet casual rapport he has with each of his students. It is a pleasure to watch. Chris’ classes are so enjoyable and engaging that each time I am in the room, I have to force myself not to participate because he and his students seem to be having so much fun, regardless of the task at hand. One element of Chris’ style, which was evident on both of his classes, was his technique of frequent review to reinforce material. This technique is made even more compelling by the fact that he relies on student answers to questions and their back and forth comments to one another to provide most of the information. Other than guiding with questions and occasional redirections, Chris can go long periods of time in which he is by no means the most dominant voice in the classroom. This style suits him and creates an atmosphere that is as challenging and engaging as it is enjoyable.

Chris is one of the best and most natural teachers with whom I have ever worked. The school or institution he chooses to work with next will not only benefit tremendously from his presence on the campus as well as in the classroom, but will be gaining a professional of the highest caliber. I am very enthusiastic in recommending him to you without reservation. Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions or require any additional information

Respectfully submitted,
Saul Drevitch, Head of School, Arrowsmith Academy
